It’s now that time of the year when we reward our veggie patches for all they have given us and will continue to give us. I find this time really special. It just feels so good to put some beautiful goodness back into the soil that has fed us in so many ways.
Using seaweed-enriched compost in no-dig gardening can help your soil regain, strengthen, improve and add to it’s carbon structure and complexity as well as providing essential
nutrients for your plants.
Additionally, and this is something I am so proud of; when we send you our luscious seaweed compost it arrives without any plastic. The bag, box and tape that you get your Atlantic Garden compost delivered in is 100% bio degradable. The actual packaging can, and should be used, alongside our compost. Simply spread open the box (don’t worry about the tape as it’s natural gum) and spread it out over the area you are looking to enrich. Then lay 2-6 inches of our glorious stuff over the top.
You can also spread some of our incredible dried seaweed over it all for an extra boost. Now this dried seaweed is very special. It looks at first like green, powdery granules. However, you will notice that after a few days every powder particle expands dramatically acting as a moisture retainer as it gradually breaks down and starts to release nutrients. If you have any children about get them involved - they’ll love it!
Here’s how to incorporate things effectively:
1. Layering: When building your no-dig garden, add a layer of seaweed enriched soil improving compost on top of your cardboard or newspaper base, followed by additional organic materials. Aim for a 2-6 inch layer.
2. Mixing: For planting, you can also mix a smaller amount of seaweed compost into the planting holes or slits you create in your mulch. This provides direct nutrients to your plants.
3. Mulch with Seaweed: Use our unique shredded dried seaweed as a mulch layer to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrients over time as it breaks down.
4. Watering: Seaweed compost can help improve soil moisture retention, but ensure you water your plants as needed, especially during dry spells.
5. Monitor Plants: Observe how your plants respond to the seaweed compost, as it can enhance growth, vigour, and resistance to pests and diseases.
6. Repeat Annually: Reapply seaweed compost a couple of times each season to maintain soil health and fertility.
Using our seaweed enriched soil improving compost not only enriches your soil but also helps improve its structure, making it an excellent addition to your no-dig gardening efforts!
Happy gardening,
Guy
